Two faculty-researchers from Caraga State University, attended the Project PAMANA: Philippine Mining at the National to Catchment Scale: from Legacy Impacts to Sustainable Futures Meeting and Workshops last June 20-24, 2022 at the University of the Philippines Los Banos, College, Laguna.
Dr. Sherryl L. Paz and Ms. Meycel C. Amarille were invited to be part of the implementation of the project PAMANA as research collaborators/technical consultants. The two faculty researchers attended a week-long capacity-building workshop on the use of novel technologies for water and sediment quality monitoring (e.g. DGT Sampling, River Discharge Measurement Using ADCP and Salt Dilution Gauging) and biodiversity assessment for freshwater aquatic ecosystems (fish and macro invertebrates sampling and sample processing and identification) which were facilitated by the national and international partners.
The project is implemented by the University of the Philippines Los Baños - School of Environmental Science and Management (UPLB-SESAM) in partnership with universities from the United Kingdom: University of Glasgow, University of Exeter, Hull University, and the Brunel University London, together with the Institute of Renewable and Natural Resources (IRNR) of the UPLB College of Forestry and Natural Resources (CFNR), and the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) also of UPLB.
The PAMANA project is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) of the UK and by the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST – PCIEERD). The main objective of the research project is to realize a combined geomorphological- and biogeochemical-based approach to establish new baseline, environmental impact monitoring, and numerical modelling approaches to determine resource potential as well as remediate, rehabilitate, and manage catchments affected by legacy, contemporary, and future mining.
