Nine faculty-researchers from Caraga State University, Dr. Romell A. Seronay, Dr. Joycelyn C. Jumawan, Dr. Eve F. Gamalinda, Mr. Jess H. Jumawan, Mr. Laurence B. Calagui, Ms. Shirlamaine Irina G. Masangcay-Calagui, Engr. Arnold G. Apdohan, Ms. Julie Rose D. Apdohan, and Ms. Chime Mora-Garcia, whose research posters were accepted entries for the different scientific poster category, attended the 41st  National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) and Scientific Poster Session at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel last July 10-11, 2019. The theme of the conference was “Caring for the Country’s Carrying Capacity” which depicts the United Nations’ Sustainable Goal.

Plenary sessions on plastic waste, sustainable marine food security, and sustainable education, talent development, and retention were the highlights of the activity. The event was graced by notable speakers who are renowned experts in their field of specialization.

The annual scientific gathering allows the scientific community—members of the academe, researchers, scientists, and government agencies to discuss and address the relevant issues related to science and technology.

The Caraga State University researchers showcased the following researches:

  • Perceived Ecosystem Services of Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Agusan del Sur;

  • Ecotourism Carrying Capacity Assessment for Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary: The Case of Sitio Panlabuhan Floating Village, Loreto, Agusan del Sur, Philippines;

  • GIS-Based Drought Vulnerability Assessment of Rice Farm Areas in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte;

  • Species diversity and endemism of herpetofauna in Basilisa and Loreto near mine sites, Province of Dinagat Islands, Caraga Region, Philippines;

  • Predicting Mangrove Suitable Areas Using GIS Weighted Suitability Analysis in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines: A Decision Support Tool in Management
    of Critical Resource;

  • Levels of Heavy Metals, Trace Elements and Sedimentation Rate in the Marine Protected Areas in Lanuza Bay, Surigao del Sur;

  • Coral reefs assessment within and outside the Marine Protected Areas in Lanuza Bay;

  • Visual Census Surveys of Reef Fishes in Marine Protected Areas of Lanuza Bay, Surigao del Sur; and

  • Phytochemical Analysis and Toxicological Screening of Crude Extracts from the roots of Derris elliptica Benth. (Tubli) Used as a Piscicide to Oreochromis niloticus. CMG/pico
