CENRO and University's PCEMO underscore paradigm shift in our approach to waste

In a bid to promote sustainable waste management practices and environmental consciousness, Caraga State University (CSU) hosted an informative Ecological Solid Waste Management Seminar in partnership with the City Government of Butuan’s City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) today at the H.E.R.O. Auditorium. The event saw a remarkable turnout, with officials from CSU Main and Cabadbaran Campus, employees, and students from different administrative units and colleges gathering to gain insights into the pressing waste management issue.

The seminar commenced with a warm welcome from the Vice President for Executive Operations and Auxiliary Services, Dr. Michelle V. Japitana. In her opening remarks, Dr. Japitana emphasized the importance of preserving the environment for future generations and encouraged everyone to be responsible for waste management. She further said that minor changes coming from everyone can lead to significant outcomes in solving today's global environmental challenges. Dr. Rolyn C. Daguil, the University President, gave a quick but critical message about the significance of the activity. He was optimistic that the activity would ignite every individual to be responsible for our environment and put emphasis on segregating waste, which is a fundamental step in how we can adequately manage our waste.

The seminar, organized by the University's Pollution Control and Environmental Management Office (PCEMO) and headed by Pollution Control Officer Dr. Marlon V. Elvira, featured a lineup of speakers who are authorities in waste management and environmental sustainability. Among the notable speakers were CENRO’s Environmental Management Researcher, Ms. Laura A. Licong, EPPD Technical Staff, Ms. Cherrylain O. Simbajon, and Environmental Information Assistant, Mr. Manuelito M. Bagolos.

Ms. Licong and Ms. Simbajon are graduates of this university’s Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences and Bachelor of Science in Forestry, respectively. Ms. Licong delivered an engaging presentation about pollution, segregation, prevention, and governing laws and policies. Ms. Simbajon, on the other hand, discussed noise pollution, while Mr. Bagolos presented solid waste management and the ecological impact of improper waste disposal. He underscored the need for a paradigm shift in our approach to waste, emphasizing the significance of recycling, composting, and reducing waste generation in our daily lives.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Seminar served as a reminder that everyone can play a crucial role in preserving the planet.
