January 8, 2025 – The University of the Philippines’ official student performing arts group, Kontemporaryong Gamelan Pilipino (Kontra-GaPi), visited Caraga State University and brought together other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Caraga for a one-day workshop on music, dance, and mime. Professor Pedro (Edru) Abraham, its founding leader, spearheaded the workshop accompanied by several of the group’s performing artists.
The university’s Dulimbay Theatre Arts Group fronted the delegation with its rendition of the ‘Dumendingan,’ a harvest dance of the Subanen people, during the welcome segment.
Aside from Caraga State University, representatives from select academic institutions also attended the workshop, including Northeastern Mindanao State College, Surigao del Norte State University, Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology, and Father Saturnino Urios University. The workshop was also supported by the Commission on Higher Education and the City Government of Butuan.
The night before the workshop, Kontra-GaPI held a free cultural concert at the PSHS Gymnasium. The performances drew inspiration from the past, showcasing the rich cultural diversity of the Philippines and its deep Asian roots. Atty. Angelo “Jijil” Jimenez, President of the UP System and a proud Caraganon, was also present to support Kontra-GaPI’s mission of bringing its unique blend of creativity, tradition, and artistry to Caraga.
