Broadening its contribution towards sustainable mining practices, Caraga State University obtained a 1.5 M grant from the Department of Science and Technology - Caraga Region to lead the development of a mulberry demonstration farm implementing biofertilizers and organic amendments to improve soil quality and health.
CSU will establish demonstration farms in Cabadbaran City and Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, which will serve as a model for best implementation in phytoremediation, a method using plants to clean up contaminated soil. Insights from the project will help inform rehabilitation efforts in mining-affected areas, including enhancing soil properties.
University President Rolyn C. Daguil, PhD, received the grant from DOST Regional Director Engr. Noel M. Ajoc in a turnover ceremony on February 10, 2025. Also in attendance were DOST Caraga Assistant Regional Director for Field Operations Ricardo N. Varela, ADN Provincial Science and Technology Director Meriam B. Bouquia, and College of Agriculture and Agri-Industry Dean Elizabeth Parac, PhD.
By developing rehabilitation blueprints, the project is instrumental in the pursuit of sustainable mining, environmental stewardship, biodiversity enhancement, and socioeconomic development, which aligns with Sustainable Development Goals 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and 13: Climate Action. | with reports and photos from DOST-Caraga.
