Caraga State University, led by President Rolyn C. Daguil, PhD, participated in an international gathering and workshop on disaster management titled ‘9th Joint Project Team Meeting for Sentinel Asia STEP-3 (JPTM2024)’ on November 5-7, 2024, in Quezon City.
VP for Executive Operations Michelle V. Japitana, D.Eng., VP for Research & Development, Innovation, and Extension Jeffrey T. Dellosa, D.Eng., and Engr. Arnaldo Gagula joined the gathering co-organized by the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) with the theme “Harnessing Satellites and Collaboration for Regional Disaster Resilience.”
In the opening, November 5, President Daguil was among the panelists for a session on “Space for DRMM: The Philippine Perspective,” where he shared the progressive steps the university is taking towards disaster management in the region, featuring its research centers and projects with local and national agencies, and state universities and colleges (SUCs).
The gathering is among Sentinel Asia’s activities to capacitate and develop human resources for effective disaster management. The CSU delegates also participated in the workshop on disaster risk assessment and systems, fire and flood monitoring and forecasting, humanitarian data exchange, and data analysis, among others.

Sentinel Asia is an international initiative that applies remote sensing and Web-GIS technologies to support disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region. It is a network of space and disaster management agencies harnessing the potential of Information and Community Technology for disaster preparedness, accurate early warnings, and minimizing victims and social and economic losses.
