In a significant move designed to bridge the gap between academia and the fast-evolving semiconductor and electronics industry, Caraga State University (CSU) has entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Semiconductor and Electronics Industry of the Philippines, Foundation, Inc. (SEIPI), held August 18, 2023, at JPark Island Resort & Water Park, Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
Dr. Rolyn C. Daguil, CSU President, was represented by Engr. Jeffrey T. Dellosa, D.Eng., PECE, the designated VP for Research, Innovation, and Extension of CSU, in the MOA signing ceremony. This activity was attended by the officials of SEIPI, which included Mr. Perry Ferrer, SEIPI Chairman/Chairman & CEO Gruppo EMS; Dr. Danilo C. Lachica, SEIPI President.
The signing of the MOA took place during the 3rd General Membership Meeting (GMM), attended by Presidents and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) from numerous semiconductor and electronics companies in the country. SEIPI is the leading organization of multinational and Filipino-owned semiconductor and electronics companies in the Philippines, with at least 350 members, including manufacturing firms, allied and support industries, and the academe. The Philippine semiconductor and electronics industry is a significant driver of the Philippine economy and the largest contributor to the country’s manufacturing sector. It is also responsible for more than 60% of the country’s export.
Engr. Dellosa also represented the academic community as one of the resource speakers in the meeting and delved into the importance of partnerships between academia and industry from an educational viewpoint.
This groundbreaking partnership with SEIPI seeks to foster mutual growth, research advancement and ensure that the next generation of talent is well-equipped to drive the nation's semiconductor and electronics industry forward.
Understanding the Significance
The semiconductor and electronics sector is crucial to the Philippines, serving as one of its primary economic pillars. SEIPI, over the years, has played an instrumental role in consolidating the country's position on the global electronics map. The collaboration with CSU is another step in SEIPI's ongoing efforts to foster innovation, augment research, and strengthen local talent.
Caraga State University, a premier institution in the region, has continually emphasized the importance of research, innovation, and industry-aligned learning. By partnering with SEIPI, the university reiterates its commitment to creating an ecosystem where students, faculty, and industry professionals collaborate, ensuring that education is aligned with the dynamic needs of the industry.
Key Aspects of the MOA
Research and Development: One of the core areas of this partnership is the mutual interest in research. Both CSU and SEIPI will embark on joint R&D initiatives that focus on emerging technologies, process improvements, and innovative solutions tailored to the semiconductor and electronics industry.
Student Internships and Training: The MOA facilitates opportunities for CSU students to intern with SEIPI member companies. This practical experience is invaluable, ensuring that students are industry-ready upon graduation.
Faculty Development: CSU faculty members will have the chance to collaborate with industry experts, participate in specialized training sessions, and gain insights into the latest industry trends and technologies.
Curriculum Design: Recognizing the rapid changes in the semiconductor and electronics sector, the MOA seeks to align CSU's curriculum with industry demands. Periodic reviews and input from SEIPI will ensure that course content remains relevant.
Resource Sharing: Both entities will share resources, from laboratories and equipment to knowledge repositories, facilitating mutual growth and understanding.
A Brighter Future Ahead
This collaboration between CSU and SEIPI is a testament to the importance of synergy between the academic and industrial sectors. As the world becomes increasingly digitized and reliant on electronics, the demand for top-tier professionals in the semiconductor and electronics industry will only grow. With this partnership, Caraga State University ensures its students are at the forefront of this evolution, well-prepared to make significant contributions to the industry and, by extension, the nation.
The MOA signifies not just a partnership but a vision for the future – a future where academia and industry walk hand in hand, fostering innovation, driving economic growth, and shaping the technological landscape of the Philippines. VPRIE/pico
