Five (5) faculty-researchers of the Mathematics Department of Caraga State University participated this year’s West Asia Mathematical School (WAMS) last August 29 – September 3, 2019 held at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India.

The 2019 West Asia Mathematical School (WAM School) with the theme “Recent Developments and Application of the Partial Differential Equations from Theory to Applications” was hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee and funded by the Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées (CIMPA) and Internation Mathematical Union (IMU).

The WAM School aimed to provide postgraduate students the knowledge of fundamental mathematics, pure and applied, either to enable them to continue the mathematical career or to place them in society to help in the progress of social issues; to create links of mathematical cooperation between countries in West Asia, and also between countries in West Asia and developed countries; to provide with specific courses and material that could be taught in subsequent years after the school is finished; to provide specific courses and material that could be taught in subsequent years after the school is finished; and to provide the basic tools that will allow the students to understand the theoretical concepts in modelling, and to venture into more concrete applications. Theoretical and numerical lectures were given by national and international experts.

This year’s WAM School was participated by universities from West Asia countries and developed countries including the Philippines. From the Philippines, five (5) faculty members from Caraga State University namely,  Dr. Rolando N. Paluga, Dr. Esamel M. Paluga, Dr. Jayrold P. Arcede, Ms. Sheila Rae E. Permanes, and Ms. Rachel C. Basañez attended the WAM School.

The 6-day WAM School covered the following special topics: Hyperbolic Conservation Laws (HCL); Coagulation-Fragmentation Models (CFM); Continuous Modelling of Lithium Batteries (CMLB); and Analysis and Numerics for Partial Differential Equations.

The topics were discussed by high calibre lecturers from different international universities, namely; Prof. Michael Grinfeld of the Univeristy of Strathclyde, UK; Prof. Mythily Ramaswamy of TIFR CAM, India; Prof. Nabil Bedjaoui of the University of Picardie Jules Verne, France; Prof. G D Veerappa Gowda of TIFR CAM, India; Prof. Fernando da Costa of the University of Aberta, Portugal; Prof. Neela Nataraj of the IIT Bombay, India; Prof. Marília Pires of the University of Évora, Portugal; Prof. Joaquim M C Correia of the University of Évora, Portugal; and Prof. Youcef Mammeri of the University of Picardie Jules Verne, France.
