The 2024 Philippine Sociological Society (PSS) International Conference formally opens its first day at Caraga State University today, October 2. Sociologists and experts from related disciplines in the Philippines and other countries have convened at the Activity Loft of HERO Learning Commons for a three-day session to explore how Philippine Sociology can decolonize knowledge systems and institutions.
A total of 294 online and in-person participants from 83 institutions across the country and the world were welcomed by University President Dr. Daguil in his speech during the opening program. He pronounced the conference as an avenue to "address pressing issues surrounding not only the university but also social realities." PSS President Dr. Leland Dela Cruz also highlighted the selection of speakers of Filipino descent as a nod to their expertise, insights, and contributions in the seven (7) themes to be explored in the plenary sessions. International participants and speakers from Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Italy, and New York were also acknowledged in his address.
The Department of Sociology, under the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, spearheads this event on behalf of the University. Ms. Connie Fern B. Miranda, MA, the department chairperson, serves as the overall chair of the working committee.
The conference will run for three days, from today until Friday, October 4, 2024. Parallel sessions will begin this afternoon and conclude with a Cultural Night.
