GP staff attends national conference on Campus Journalism

ICT Center - Gold Panicles (GP), the official student publication of CSU joined in the National Conference on Campus Journalism and 4th Writing Competition last January 20-22, 2011 in the Development Academy of the Philippines Conference Center in the scenic Tagaytay City.

Mr. Loreniel Anonuevo, Mr. Mathew Albert B. Pana, and GP’s editor-in-chief Ms. Mary Grace Renon were among the  students from CSU and the few who joined the conference which was also attended by other members and staff of school publications from different colleges and universities in the Philippines. Technical Adviser Mr. Patrick Matala was also there to support the CSU delegates.

Topics during the three-day conferences were discussions and workshops on News Writing, Editorial Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Page Design and Layout, and Photojournalism.

The event was hosted by the Organization of Student Services Educators, Inc. (OSSEI) to give student journalists information about campus journalism and enhance their competency in writing.

Among the few speakers on the first day of the conference was Professor Yvonne T. Chua from the University of the Philippines Diliman who talked about “Citizen Journalism”. In her own words, she emphasized the fact that everyone can become a journalist in their own way. Later that day, Mr. Romel Lalata from the Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) discussed News Writing.

Following the next day were Professor Ben Domingo’s Editorial Writing presentation, Mr. Jimmy Domingo’s dialogue about Photo Journalism, and Dr. Armida Santiago’s discourse on Page Design & Layout. Mr. Glenn Agustin, on the other hand, lectured on Editorial Cartooning. Following every lectures and discussions of the speakers were workshops to evaluate the students understanding on the subject presented to them.

Entries for the writing competition were selected after the workshops and the winners for every category were awarded during the closing ceremony of the conference. Certificates were also provided for all the schools who participated in the three-day event.

Overall, the National Conference on Campus Journalism and 4th Writing Competition was considered by the participants as a success. Aspiring journalists and students were all pleased to participate in the event where there flair for credible journalism was tested. Lastly, the event was a perfect venue wherein the young were provided with technical assistance with regards to campus journalism.
