On March 31, 2017, 2:00 P.M. Caraga State University joined the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and Regional DRRM councils’ first quarter nationwide simultaneous earthquake drill.
The synchronized earthquake drill was headed by the National Service Training Program (NSTP) unit under its director, Dr. Nelia S. Raganas. The CSU DRRM team were on training for four days beginning March 28-31 at the CSU Conference room. The CSU DRRM is expected to put up its own DRRM mission, vision, goals and objectives, and will develop a developmental and sustainable plan for the CSU DRRM.
Dr. Anthony M. Penaso, CSU president, in his opening remarks noted the importance of risk reduction and risk management.“Disaster risk reduction is an integral part of CSU’s social and economic development. It is essential if development is to be sustainable for the future. We should all be informed and resilient, and do our part in change mitigation and in the protection and sustainability of our environment.”
“Drop, cover, and hold on,” are things we should remember whenever an earthquake happens and that we should all be prepared and be on our toes when an emergency occurs.
The initiative is fully supported by the office of the Vice President for Administration, headed by Dr. Armie Leila M. Mordeno with its adjunct office, Administrative and Auxiliary Service, headed by Dr. Luisito I. Tabada. Other colleges and units are also supportive of the said training with its deans and directors leading the other members of the CSU family to join hands in disaster risk reduction and disaster preparedness.
In line with this, the Office of the Civilian Defense (OCD) launched the #BidaangHanda Campaign which generally aims to promote disaster preparedness through public’s participation to the NSED. The main goal of the activity is to gather the maximum number of commitments via social media.
The campaign involves the participation of the government, private, academe, and media sectors as well as other stakeholders by generating a photo and/or video of individual/s doing a preparedness activity with the fan sign or spoken statement: “Mag-da-Duck, Cover and Hold kami sa March 31, 2017! Dahilbidaanghanda!” #BidaAngHanda is the official hashtag for this year’s National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED).
“As we scale-up earthquake preparedness all over the country, we enjoin every organization, family and individual to support the BidaangHanda campaign and participate in the 1st quarter nationwide earthquake drill. Sabay-sabaytayong mag-Duck, Cover and Hold sa March 31, 2017 dahilbidaanghanda!” said NDRRMC Executive Director and Civil Defense Administrator Usec. Ricardo B. Jala.
