The Department of Biology, together with its undergrad and graduate students, recently held its talk series on new frontiers in breast cancer research and drug discovery with Dr. Chien-Chih Chiu and PhD student Rovelyn Gallego from Kaohsiung Medical University. Ms. Gallego is also a faculty member of the Department of Biology at the College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (CMNS).

The talk series, which occurred on August 14, 2024, at the Activity Loft of HERO Learning Commons, focused on the cutting-edge mechanisms of cancer progression, chemoresistance, and programmed cell death, emphasizing immunogenic cell death. Dr. Chiu and Ms. Gallego’s research, which spans both apoptotic and non-apoptotic cell death processes such as necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis, has made significant strides in leveraging these pathways to increase the efficacy of natural and semi-synthetic anticancer drugs.

Beyond sharing groundbreaking research, the seminar served as a platform to broaden collaboration networks and facilitate professional development for attendees. By engaging MS and BS Biology students and faculty in these discussions, the symposium aimed to equip the next generation of scientists with the knowledge and connections necessary to make meaningful contributions to cancer biology and pharmacology. This initiative underscores the university's commitment to advancing collective understanding and fostering innovation in the fight against cancer. │ via CMNS/PICO
