CSU Jump-start its “No Plastic” Practice

< >

On February 1, 2018, the Caraga State University cafeteria and food concessionaires in the colleges, unite with CSU, in the official implementation of the non-use of plastic in accord to the Memorandum Order No. 12, series 2018 released by the Office of the University President.

Under this new practice, students, faculty, and all CSU personnel have to bring their own containers when purchasing foods and beverages in the cafeteria and in all the eateries inside the University. Those who do not have personal food containers yet, the College of Engineering and Information Technology (CEIT) and the CarSUAdPMCo canteens are selling food containers at affordable prices. The cafeteria can lend containers and utensils provided that the borrowers shall leave their valid Identification Cards to the canteen staff, which will be given back after returning the borrowed food containers.

On its first day of implementation, Vice President for Administration, Dr. Armie Leila M. Mordeno, Director for Resource Generation and Management Services, Dr. Emmanuel F. Nono, and the Director for General Services, Engr. Marilou G. Umpad inspected the concessionaire owned cafeterias, and all the eateries in CSU as directed by CSU President, Dr. Anthony M. Penaso.

Dr. Mordeno said that bottled waters will still remain in the stores as selling of empty bottles will also serve as an income generating project of the University and Student Council (USC) and League of Campus Organizations (LCO). The VP for Administration emphasized that even before the said target schedule, the CarSUAdPMCo canteen and concessionaires in the CEIT, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) and College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) already started a soft implementation of the non-use of plastic containers in their products.

The Procurement Office is also directed to check the purchase requests (PR) of meals wherein only paper cups must be used on the provision of free flowing coffee and paper pack for food instead of Styrofoam  (in certain events).

Having been recognized as “Sustainable and Eco-Friendly University” by the Environmental Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (EMB-DENR), the implementation of the non-use of plastic is one of the ways to maintain the University’s “Eco-friendliness.” Aside from maintaining a cleaner and greener environment, the University also commits to ensure the health and wellness of the students and personnel. Thus, selling of junk foods will also be prohibited middle of 2018.

The No Plastic drive will be made into a policy after a thorough consultation with all its stakeholders. CSU considers giving an annual award with monetary incentives to the best concessionaire who has strictly implemented the “No Plastic Drive.”IMRL/piaea
