The Caraga State University, DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), and Local Government Unit-Ampayon formalized their partnership to protect and pursue environmental developments of the Ampayon Creek, a significant waterway inside the campus that drains through the Agusan River.
The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), signed during the Adopt-an-Estero/Water Body Summit in Butuan City on November 29, details the environmental interventions to counter the deterioration of the creek due to silts, wastes, and other debris. The general undertakings included developing a comprehensive action plan, constructing wetlands, and planting bamboo culm along the riverbanks.
The Pollution Control and Environmental Management Office (PCEMO) and College of Forestry and Environmental Science (CoFES) will lead the inspection and recommendation of actions, including research and extension initiatives.
Aside from monitoring, EMB will offer technical assistance and training to capacitate its implementing partners and ensure alignment with DENR’s goal to improve the quality of water bodies in the country. LGU-Ampayon, on the other hand, will set local ordinances and regulations to strengthen the initiative, communicate with residents for support, and collaborate in planting trees and other vegetation, among others.
University President Rolyn C. Daguil, PhD, DENR-EMB OIC-Regional Director Engr. Dennis O. Celestial, MM, signed the MOA in the presence of PCEMO Head Vincent N. Cotoron, MSc, and EMB Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division Chief, For. Ramon Abogadie, MEM.
During Earth Day on April 22, the university also launched the Adopt-an-Estero Program with EMB. The said initiatives reflect CSU's commitment to environmental conservation for a healthy, clean, and safe environment for its stakeholders.
