The facilitators and students of the National Service Training Program – Civic Welfare Training Service (NSTP-CWTS) of Caraga State University (CSU) conducted a community immersion in Barangay Pianing, Butuan City last February 19, 2011.
The activity was spearheaded by Mr. Christian T. Perez and Miss Marie Jean A. Escobal,
NSTP-CWTS facilitators of the university, with the students enrolled in the NSTP-CWTS. The community immersion in Barangay Pianing was the second time for the university.
The purpose of the activity was to educate the residents of the barangay on sources of practical and alternative livelihood as means to support their families. It also aimed at sharing the knowledge, skills and expertise of the students learned from the university to the less fortunate and under privileged people in the barangay.
The following activities were successfully conducted:
Table Skirting
Handicraft Making (Doormat, Basket and Flower Making using Indigenous materials)
Literacy Program for Adults (Health Awareness and Medicine)
Literacy Program for the Children (Basic Education)
Feeding for children

The training program, which the facilitators plan to hold every year, aims not only to “help other community in our own little way but as well as to expose students in the reality of life”, Mr. Perez said. “Happiness can’t be achieved with money alone but it can be felt inside our hearts.”
The students as well as the facilitators were glad with the good accommodation provided by the Barangay Officials headed by Honorable Licenia C. Sumaylo, their Barangay Captain.
