Caraga State University was a venue for the Lee Peng Yee Symposium in Mathematics and Mathematics Education that was conducted on March 22-24, 2018 at the Organic Agriculture Training Center, Caraga State University. Professor Lee Peng Yee of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University in Singapore convened a total of fifty-nine (59) Mathematics educators for a three-day seminar-workshop.
The event was initiated by the Mathematical Society of the Philippines- Regions 10, 12 and ARMM in coordination with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of MSU-IIT. Some participants came from the Higher Education Institutions such as: Caraga State University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, MSU-Marawi, and Surigao State College of Technology, others are High School faculty members under the Department of Education and the Philippine Science High School.
Dr. Rolando N. Paluga, CSU Vice President for Academic Affairs gave the opening remarks highlighting the importance of the Lee Peng Yee Symposium. Dr. Beatriz G. Torno, Regional Director, Department of Education, Caraga Region delivered an inspirational message. Her talk focused on the significance of the conduct of the activity to the DepEd teachers. She also appreciated the University’s efforts to educate its constituents through this kind of activities. She even extended her support to whatever similar activities the University shall initiate in the future.
Dr. Jayrold Arcede, the Symposium chair introduced the Resource Speaker, Professor Lee Peng Yee of the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University. Professor Lee talked on “Learning Differently”. The open forum was facilitated by Ms. Gretchen Bugaay.
Several sessions were conducted; one is for the paper presentation of studies conducted by the Mathematics education group. Other parallel sessions include: the Henstock Integration Theory. Dr. Emmanuel Cabral served as session chair assisted by Dr. Arcede.
Topics on Algebra, Topology and Analysis, Statistics, Graph Theory, and Applied Mathematics were discussed and Collaborative Workshop and informal interaction with Prof. Lee Peng Yee and the Mathematics Education Group was also done.
A write shop capped the three-day event with Dr. Alvic Arnado of the College of Education heading the session, assisting him was Mr. Breix Michael Agua of CSU Mathematics Department. BMGA/piaea
