Metallurgist and Associate Professor Richard Alorro, PhD, from Curtin University, Western Australia, shared his expertise in managing mine waste and technospheric ore in the first two of the six workshop series funded by DOST-PCIEERD on November 19 and 22, 2024.
The "Mining Waste Management towards Sustainable Mining" covers critical minerals in energy transition, technospheric mining of mine wastes, metallurgy basics, and research methods. It also includes action planning and proposal writing.
The workshop aligns with the flagship economic drivers of the Caraga Region in support of the regional development strategy “Industrialize and Innovate Fishery, Agroforestry, Mining, and Ecotourism (I2FAME).
Aside from Caraga State University, it engages partners from the mining industry and local and regional government agencies, highlighting the recycling and reusing of mine waste and adopting the Circular Economy concepts.
The activity is relevant to CSU's quest to digitize mining operations and reduce environmental footprints through environmental management and protection, mine rehabilitation, and waste management.
