The Caraga State University (CSU) officially announces the opening of the Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology (BSMB), which aims to produce highly skilled marine biologists equipped to address the challenges of marine biodiversity conservation, coastal sustainability, and climate resilience.
Strengthening the university’s commitment to environmental conservation, marine science research, and sustainable development, the BSMB will be offered this upcoming AY 2025-2026 under the College of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (CMNS) - Department of Biology.
The program received a Certificate of Program Compliance from CHED on February 28, 2025, and was approved by the CSU Board of Regents on March 12, 2025. It aligns with the Caraga Regional Development Plan 2023-2028, industrializing the fishery sector, accelerating climate action, and strengthening disaster resilience. It will contribute to building a blue economy supporting local industries and communities.
Core Faculty
At the helm of the BSMB Program is Program Chairperson Assistant Professor Laurence B. Calagui, an expert in Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Coastal Resource Management, who has played a key role in shaping the Program’s academic direction, working alongside Assistant Professor Shirlamaine Irina Calagui who specializes in Fish Biology and Marine Ecology.
Professor Rommel Seronay, Associate Professor Henson Dejarme, Professor Meljan Demetillo, Professor Leila Ombat, Associate Professor Maria Elma Won, and Associate Professor Rexie Magdugo, who have strong backgrounds in biological sciences, fisheries, marine biotechnology, and ecosystem restoration, also guided the program development.
Enriching the faculty lineup with specializations in marine research, laboratory techniques, and fieldwork methodologies are Exur Buenaflor, Jashin Rosal, Archie Along, Florence Almadin, Dawn Orboc, and Jeszianlenn Plaza.
With the input of the faculty and the assistance of several faculty members in the curriculum design and accreditation processes, the BSMB was realized. This reflects CSU’s commitment to producing skilled and environmentally responsible marine biologists. | via DOB/CMNS, PICO
